Chestnut Hill Hospital's Cancer Program
Chestnut Hill Hospital's oncology program provides quality cancer prevention, screening, diagnostic, treatment and follow-up and is approved by the American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer. Chestnut Hill Hospital became a member of the University of Pennsylvania Cancer Network in 1997.
Comprehensive cancer services include medical imaging, pathology, diagnostics, surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation oncology. Digital mamo breast high resolution ultrasound & minimally invasive breast biopsy services are available in the Hospital's medical imaging department and Women's Center.
Chestnut Hill is committed to providing ongoing psychosocial support for people with cancer and their families to assist them with whatever life changes may accompany the cancer diagnosis. An oncology social worker is an active part of the interdisciplinary team to assist with emotional and practical concerns, and psychiatrists are available as needed at any time during or after treatment.
Support services also include a Breast Cancer Networking Group, a group for people with any type of cancer, and one for men with prostate cancer. In addition, the hospital hosts the American Cancer Society's Look Good...Feel Better program for women undergoing cancer treatment and the I Can Cope educational program. It is Chestnut Hill Hospital's priority to treat the "whole" patient and offer individual and group counseling to assist patients and their families at this stressful time. In addition, health educational programs and free screenings for the early detection of cancer are offered throughout the year. Hospice services are also available.

Penn Radiation Oncology at Chestnut Hill Hospital
Further enhancing Chestnut Hill’s cancer program will be the establishment of the Penn Radiation Oncology Center at Chestnut Hill Hospital. The University of Pennsylvania Health System’s Department of Radiation Oncology is a national leader in clinical care, research, and education. The new Center, currently under construction and slated for opening in Spring 2008, will feature the latest in radiation therapy treatment technology including a new multi-leaf collimator linear accelerator (MLC LinAc). The MLC LinAc technology combines intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) which will provide enhanced patient care by confirming patient and tumor positioning immediately prior to treatment with even less risk of harming adjacent tissue.
This new collaboration between Chestnut Hill Hospital and the University of Pennsylvania Department of Radiation Oncology will enable physicians and patients to seamlessly access the cancer services at the Abramson Cancer Center when needed. Patients in need of more specialized cancer will benefit from Penn’s planned 2008 opening of The Raymond and Ruth Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine and The Roberts Proton Therapy Center Cancer. Cancer services will be at the forefront of the patient care opportunities at The Perelman Center which will house the Abramson Cancer Center. The Roberts Proton Therapy Center will be the largest and most comprehensive proton therapy center in the world. Proton therapy is the most precise form of advanced radiation therapy available to treat certain cancers and other diseases. Chestnut Hill Hospital patients will have access to clinical research studies combining standard radiation therapy with proton therapy for the treatment of certain cancers.
