First Hospital in Pennsylvania with the da Vinci® Si

Robotic Surgery HD System

Philadelphia, PA, Thursday, June 18, 2009—Chestnut Hill Hospital (CHH) today became the first in the state to acquire the da Vinci® Si Robotic Surgery System. Surgeons at CHH will now be able to use breakthrough robotics technology that provides improved dexterity and increased precision for optimal performance of minimally invasive surgery. Patients undergoing surgery for urology, gynecology and general surgery procedures with the da Vinci often benefit from reduced instances of infection, shorter hospital stays, faster recovery times and quicker return to normal activities.

The da Vinci Si System extends the da Vinci base model technology to introduce several new features designed to provide additional clinical and operational benefits. The Si System integrates enhanced 3D HD robotic technology to virtually extend the surgeon’s eyes and hands into the surgical field. The system offers magnification 10 times that of the naked eye. In addition, a simplified user interface enhances operating room efficiency and is more compatible with existing OR suite technology for the seamless integration of the da Vinci SiSystem into the OR of the 21st century at Chestnut Hill Hospital.

"The enhanced clarity and detail made possible with the Si technology are critical when performing delicate dissection or in reconstructive procedures," says University of Pennsylvania surgeon Donna Barbot, M.D., chair of surgery at CHH. "This means a better operation for the patient with reduced complications and recovery time."

"We are very pleased to have the opportunity to be the first team in the state to operate with the da Vinci Si model," says Ben Gocial, M.D., chair of gynecology at CHH. “The surgical team will now be able to set a new standard for the treatment of a broad range of gynecological conditions. We've only started to explore all the capabilities of this system.”

The da Vinci Si Surgical System consists of an ergonomically designed surgeon’s console, a patient-side cart with four interactive robotic arms. Powered by advanced robotic technology, the surgeon’s hand movements are scaled, filtered and seamlessly translated into precise movements of the instruments. The net result is an intuitive interface with breakthrough surgical capabilities.

Chestnut Hill Hospital, a service of Chestnut Hill Health System, provides a full range of quality medical, surgical and diagnostic inpatient and outpatient services for families in northwest Philadelphia and eastern Montgomery County.
