Philadelphia, PA – Chestnut Hill Hospital recently announced the appointment of well known health care advocate and local bioethicist Vicki D. Lachman, Ph.D., APRN, as chair of the Chestnut Hill Hospital board of trustees. Dr. Lachman served as a board member for more than 15 years and she now will lead the 10-member team, composed of physicians and professionals from the community.

“It has been my pleasure to work with Dr. Lachman,” says Brooks Turkel, CHH chief executive officer. “She has made a significant contribution to the Hospital, particularly through her participation in the Hospital’s quality improvement initiatives and her contributions on our ethics committee. Her proven excellence in national health care leadership and ethics enables her to provide a comprehensive perspective on sometimes difficult health care issues.”

Dr. Lachman earned a doctoral degree in education from Temple University,a master’s in psychiatric nursing, and a master’s in bioethics from the University of Pennsylvania, with a focus on the ethical issues at end of life. Dr. Lachman serves on the American Nurses Association Center for Ethics and Human Rights Advisory Board and writes the quarterly Ethics, Policy and Law column in the MedSurg Nursing Journal.

Dr. Lachman is a clinical professor for the master’s and doctoral nursing programs at Drexel University where she teaches ethics and mentors students. This year she was chosen as a Fellow by the American Academy of Nursing. In addition, Dr. Lachman has authored more than 100 publications and her third book, Ethical Challenges in Healthcare: Developing Your Moral Compass, was released in June 2009 by Springer Publishing.

“We are excited to have Dr. Lachman’s expertise at our table and serving to guide quality initiatives at the Hospital,” says Dr. John Scanlon, Chief Medical Officer, Chestnut Hill Hospital. “Many community members will remember her dedication to making Chestnut Hill restaurants smoke-free, as part of her work as chair of the Chestnut Hill Community Association Health Committee.
